THEY WOULD BE KINGS

Posted by on Nov 4, 2014 in Announcements |

After over 15 years of my national radio show being syndicated in Sacramento on KHTK, I retired, unretired, and moved fulltime to Northern California over four years ago to re start my show again on KHTK. I love many things about living in Sacramento, and not just it’s two hours from somewhere better, no matter which direction you go. The people here are great, and loyal. They’ve been loyal to me over the years on radio, and now through my podcast. They are also fiercely loyal to the only major sports team in town, the Sacramento Kings. In the time I’ve actually lived here, the Kings have come close to moving to Anaheim and Seattle. Both times the former ownership was ready to pack up and leave, but the fan base made enough of a line in the sand the proposed relocations never happened. Then the team was sold to a new, vibrant ownership group and they made the promise to keep the Kings in town, and now a new downtown arena is being built. Heady times for the Kings, who have sucked major ass the last 10+ seasons. They have all the momentum of the city behind them, and they rightly are feeling good. The ownership has committed to making the team a success, on and off the court. Well, I bought in. Literally. A few months ago, I was more than interested in advertising my podcast with the Kings. More than ever, there was never a better time to support the team, and no better way to reach the people of Sacramento to further spread the word about the show. So I reached out to the team, to inquire about advertising and buying season tickets to give away on my show. Keep in mind the Kings radio broadcasts locally are carried by KHTK, my former home and the folks who fired me a year ago. KHTK (and their mighty 50,000 watts) is NOT a factor in the ratings locally. They can’t even break the top 20 and regularly get beaten by a low power AM ESPN affiliate. So my goal was not to buy advertising on KHTK, rather on the Kings radio network which included KHTK. I figured despite the fact it’s KHTK, people would again listen. The Kings assured me that their time on KHTK for game broadcasts was THEIR domain and CBS could not tell them who to sell advertising to. I told the Kings repeatedly that KHTK had fired me, and they said point blank, “We make the decisions.” I believed them, to the tune of a package worth $40,000. Season tickets, advertising on the radio broadcasts, and a web presence on the Kings site. We discussed promotional nights for the show at the arena, and advertising the show using the Kings logo. It was a done deal, they ran it up their legal...

The Phantom Returns!

I am not a believer that things all happen for a reason. I am a believer that when things happen you didn’t expect and am not ready for, you roll with it. And somehow, you figure out a solution. Or you are just screwed. I faced that recently with the abrupt resignation of Drew Hoffar. As I’ve outlined before, he handled most of the tech responsibilities with the show, but more importantly to me, he was a co-host…someone to throw my thoughts at. I had openly considered working alone, or with Janet, or with an up and coming comedian. Then I got a wild hair and contacted Phantom, who I had worked with for a few years during my run in mornings at KHTK. Turns out that was a fantastic wild hair to pluck. It was an old man wild hair, coming out of my ear if you must know. But the hair pulling was worth it. As you can tell over the last few weeks, Phantom and I have picked up right where we left off. Except we have unlimited time and no censorship now! I’m thrilled with Phantom’s contributions to the show, and the vibe we have going is something I’m very happy with. I’m glad I plucked the wild hair, and am thrilled you guys are enjoying the addition of Phantom. He’s making it easier for me to just have fun and direct the show and see where it takes us. Phantom (real name spoiler! It’s Mark Lowe) called what we are doing now “old guys radio”. I like the sound of that. And as stressed as I was a few weeks ago about the subscription codes, live stream, downloading, levels, co host, et al….it’s nice to have gone with my somewhat smaller gut and reached out to Phantom. Why, the whole thing makes me want to say Drew who? But I won’t, because like Ron Burgandy, I’m classy. Please give the new guy a follow on twitter @PhantomRadio60 ! Thanks! Don Geronimo,...

Finally Figuring It Out!

Finally Figuring It Out!

Well, here we are almost one month since the restart, and what hasn’t happened? Our deal with U Stream went bonkers, our live streaming AGAIN became a major issue… many of you still had coupon code issues, and then with no notice at all, Drew Hoffar quit. Oh, and the debacle with the Sacramento Kings and Steve Cottinghim and KHTK radio.. I don’t mind telling you it was dicey for a few days here at the home offices. BUT cooler heads prevailed, and I was reminded by an old friend of mine what I do best. Turn chicken shit into chicken salad. So I decided to jump in the deep end and immerse myself in areas of this business I’d never been involved with. Like the tech issues. I didn’t know how to record, stream, or place the show on the site for downloading. It was a learning experience for ALL of us. The upside is now the show is being presented the way it always should have been: with loud/perfect levels and streaming that actually works. I didn’t know the levels had been low prior, and will make sure they are correct. Most of these tasks had been under the direction of Drew, and I was left without any knowledge or direction how to handle them when he unexpectedly left. We have secured a new partner for the live stream aspect. It will take place in a few weeks and will not be presented to you until it’s right. Until then we have brokered a deal with U Stream to continue the service until we change providers. Drew leaving was a shock to us. I was thrilled to find out that Phantom was available, and had interest in joining the show. Less than a week later, all is right with the world again. Phant has settled in like he never left, and it seems like we picked up right where we left off at CBS Radio. This has been the craziest time in my career. I am energized and remained focused on doing the show largely because of you, my loyal listeners. Through thick and thin you stick with me, and I can never say how much that means to me. I’m going to stay connected through this website, as I have been neglecting it with so much other shit going on. We’re working to clean things up and make it easier to navigate. An FAQ page, photo page, and show links are coming soon. Thank you all again, and a special tip o the cap to Janet. She stepped in last week when Drew walked, and those shows were among the realest I’ve done in a while. It’s nice to know she’s in the bullpen for the show. Next time I’ll get into the Kings situation and we’ll start to plan the porch sittin at KHTK. Thanks...

Todee’s show DL, Drew update

Posted by on Oct 7, 2014 in Misc. |

Today’s show Download will be slightly delayed today , as Drew normally handles these duties. Hell, I feel lucky I got the stream on the air and remembered to record the show! So I got that join for me. I’m on with our tech guys now, and we are getting the show ready to DL. Thanks for your patience. The Drew update is that he’s still in the hospital system. I do not know exactly what happened to him, or what the prognosis is.  But he did text me a little while ago that he’s got more medical stuff ahead of him this afternoon. So all I can say is do whatever you need to, brother. And everyone please take a second out to think good thoughts for Drew.   Thanks!  ...
